Body:
A medieval well that was once believed to heal eye diseases and wash away sins has been uncovered in Rainhill . After a series of excavation works by Historic England, St Anne’s Well was uncovered at a private farm in the area. The historic well was located by looking at a photograph from 1983 which showed it was still visible and by using a description on the National Heritage List which said the well was large, made of sandstone and with steps to the water. A local legend suggested St Anne’s Well was associated with a nearby priory, lost during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Holy wells were an important part of Christianity in the Middle Ages and St Anne’s Well continued to be revered even after the Dissolution, and by the 19th ce...

Archaeologists from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) started excavations in September 2016 at Khirbat al-Minya, an early-Islamic caliphate palace on the shore of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. Led by PD Dr. Hans-Peter Kuhnen of the Department of Ancient Studies at JGU, the team is hoping to find out how the site looked before the palace was built and whether the building was used for different purposes after the catastrophic earthquake of 749 AD. The palace, which was still under construction at the time, suffered major damage during the quake. Findings from the new excavations show that the building lost its palatial function as a result of the earthquake and was subsequently only used by craftsmen, traders, and sugar cane farme...

The search is on for an architect to oversee a £2m project to restore a Tyneside landmark to its former glory. St Mary’s Island and Lighthouse in Whitley Bay is a popular tourist site with thousands of people visiting it every year. The 46m-high lighthouse was decommissioned in 1984 and is now open solely as a visitor centre. But now plans have been released by North Tyneside Council to rejuvenate the landmark by 2019, as part of the £336m Whitley Bay Seafront Masterplan. The masterplan has already seen schemes submitted to restore the historic Spanish City Dome, as part of a £10m project. Currently, the lighthouse offers a small museum, visitor centre and cafe. Plans outlined by North Tyneside Council would see the structure of the towe...
